IPL 2012




The IPL league will commence with Chennai Super Kings, the defending champions, taking on the Mumbai Indians, the Champions League T20 winners, at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The league stage, which comprises seventy-two matches, with each team playing the other eight in a home-and-away format, will go on till Sunday, 20th May 2012.The venue of the two finalist teams from 2011 edition will host the Play offs. Bengaluru will host Qualifier 1 (1 vs 2) and the Eliminator (3 vs 4) on 22nd May and 23rd May respectively. Qualifier 2 and the Final will be played in Chennai, on 25th May and 27th May respectively. Nine teams are slated to take part in the tournament, which attracts players from around the world with its hefty salaries. In addition to Chennai and Mumbai, are last year’s losing finalists – the Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers, and Pune Warriors.A new stadium in Pune, which is subject to final completion, is set to make its debut as an IPL venue. It will host all eight ‘home’ games of the Pune Warriors India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on its portal that Dharamsala, Cuttack and Vizag will host two games each. While the BCCI chose to release the IPL schedule Friday, the Australian Cricket Board announced its squad for the third Test of India’s ongoing tour. James Pattinson, one of the chief tormentors of India in the first two Tests, has been ruled out of the remaining Tests in Perth and Adelaide because of a foot injury. He has been replaced in the squad by 21-year-old Mitchell Starc, who hails from New South Wales, but Queenslander Ryan Harris is likely to take Pattinson’s spot in the starting line-up.

As the name suggests, the team is based in the Indian city of Chennai. The team is owned by a company called India Cements, which is run by M. Srinivasan. He is also the secretary of BCCI which is the governing body of the game in the country. Captain of the team is M. S. Dhoni, who also happens to be the captain of the Indian national cricket team in both the formats of the game. The team exclusively participates in the IPL & in the T20 Champions League. Other notable players in the team include Suresh Raina, Michael Hussy, Albie Morkel, Dwayne Bravo, Tim Southee, Scott Styris etc. The team has an excellent record in IPL having won the tournament twice already in 2010 & 2011. They reached the final in the first edition of the tournament & were defeated in the semis in the very next one in 2009.
