Chance for Rahul
However, the wise men sprang a surprise by choosing a 17-man side with an additional bowler in Rahul Sharma. The promising leg-spinner could harness the bounce on the Australian pitches. The side led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni has seven specialist batsmen, two wicket-keeper batsmen, five pacemen and three spinners. The side has balance and options.Sachin Tendulkar's last match for India in ODIs was the victorious ODI World Cup final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai last year.Another prominent member of that triumphant eleven, Zaheer Khan, will spearhead the pace pack.Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Varun Aaron, S. Sreesanth and Munaf Patel could not be considered for fitness reasons. Praveen Kumar is back after being sidelined by an injury to his ribs.Another swing bowler, Irfan Pathan, got the nod over Abhimanyu Mithun because of his left-arm variety and the ability with the willow.
Parthiv stays

Wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel holds on to his place despite indifferent form with the bat in the home ODI series against the West Indies that preceded the tour of Australia.Dinesh Karthik, who could have strengthened the side's batting, and Wriddhiman Saha missed out. Parthiv was not expected to retain his spot.Manoj Tiwari, who notched up a century in the fifth ODI against the West Indies in Chennai, finds favour with the selectors. With much focus on the younger generation of batsmen, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Manoj Tiwari would have to shoulder much of the middle-order burden on pitches that could offer movement and lift to the pacemen even in the abbreviated form of the game. While M.S Dhoni's record as a batsman in the ODIs is impressive  he averages 51.15 at a strike rate of 88.52  the batting ability of Ravindra Jadeja, Pathan and R. Ashwin could lend depth to the line-up in the ODI format. This side would not be short of energy on the field.
